Autoimmune Hepatitis

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is chronic inflammation of the liver caused by an autoimmune condition. Autoimmune hepatitis occurs when the body's own immune system causes injury to healthy liver cells, leading to inflammation and damage.

This is a chronic condition that may, if untreated, result in cirrhosis, and in some cases cause cirrhosis despite treatment. AIH typically affects more women than men and often can be diagnosed in women in their early twenties and then again their sixties. AIH is sometimes found in people with other autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and hypothyroidism.
